"The Internet Is Coming", the final episode of The IT Crowd, aired as a one-off special on 27 September 2013. Production began in 2011, and filming finished in July 2013. Chris O'Dowd (Roy) had this to say after filming the finale: "It was lovely to say hello to the characters again - but also to say goodbye to them. I think we've probably done it now and I'd be surprised if we did any more."

Graham Linehan had originally confirmed that there would be a series 5 and a possible special to end the series.

In October 2011, however, he stated that there will not be a fifth series – just a one off special in 2012. As of August 2012, the script for the episode had been written, but in November 2012, the special was postponed to 2013. In December 2012, Linehan tweeted  that the special would begin filming "in the middle of next year". On 8 May 2013, it was confirmed by Channel 4 and the BBC that the special would begin shooting in a few weeks, and would air later in the year. Having finished filming in July 2013, the special was scheduled to be aired in October.

In early September 2013, Graham Linehan tweeted that the special was to air at the end of the month and more details by Channel 4 were to follow. It was revealed that the special episode was to be broadcast 27 September at 9pm.
