Storyline:Elena writes an email to Bonnie, who is ostensibly spending the summer with her mother, to catch her up on the summer. She can't believe where the time has gone -- but Elena mostly spent it in bed with Damon. Caroline spent the summer picking the color palette for their dorm room while Tyler was off helping a wolf pack in Tennessee. Matt is traveling Europe with Rebekah, and we see that's involving some enthusiastic girl-on-girl threesomes.
Bonnie writes back, using Jeremy as her medium. She dictates to him as Elena continues making out with Damon. Katherine struggles as a human, scared of everything. Bonnie asks if Elena has heard from Stefan, but she hasn't.
Back in the real world, Damon tries to convince Elena not to head off to college. She debates calling Stefan, but doesn't.
Meanwhile, at the bottom of the lake, Stefan drowns for the millionth time, comes back to life and drowns again.
Jeremy practices his story for why he's had so much trouble, preparing to go back to school. He's going to stay with Damon while Elena heads off to Whitmore College.
On campus, Bonnie assures Elena she's not to late to break things off with Damon and track Stefan down. They're excited to finally start college. Bonnie the ghost says she's starting with them.
Liz Forbes helps Caroline settle in to her room. When she leaves, Elena and Caroline drink to being "functional vampires" and the next chapter in their lives. They're about to enjoy a blood bag, when their third roommate walks in.
Back at high school, Bonnie dictates another message through Jeremy, who reminds her she's just postponing the inevitable and people will find out eventually that she's dead.
As Damon checks in with Elena on the phone, he gets an unwelcome visitor: Katherine.
Rebekah drops in on Matt while he's working a town picnic. They said no strings, he didn't expect to see her again, but she wanted to give him one last chance to come with her when she left town. They have a conversation in between making out against a tree. Something about Jeremy's Gilbert ring being stolen in Prague comes up.
Liz Forbes sits down for a bite at a table and Stefan joins her. Except that it soon becomes completely clear that it's not Stefan, but Silas. He compels her to let him slit her wrist and drink from it and explains that Stefan is his doppelganger. He denies he's a vampire, even though he needs human blood to function -- he's psychic. When he hears that she can't help him, he tells her to only remember that Stefan stopped by.
On campus, a hot guygives them a flyer for a party that night.
At high school, two guys give Jeremy a hard time, knocking him around and knocking the phone out of his hand. He fights back -- hard, and everyone stares.
Damon assesses disheveled Katherine and guesses that she wants him to turn her. He's happy to oblige to get her to leave, but she thinks since she's taken the cure, she might not wake up if she dies.
The principal of Jeremy's school calls and Katherine answers. He's been expelled.
Katherine begs Damon to help her. She has enemies everywhere and wants his help.
At the bottom of the quarry, Stefan dies yet again and hallucinates talking to Damon, who urges him to turn off his humanity. But Stefan doesn't want to turn into a monster again.
In their dorm room, Caroline goes through the stuff of their roommate Megan. Out of annoyance, she tries Megan's protein water in the fridge, but it burns her immediately. Vervane. Megan comes out of the shower, wondering what's going on. Caroline heals quickly and plays it off like the water just went down the wrong pipe. She hands it back to Megan and acts like everything is fine. When Megan is out of earshot, Caroline suggests they lock her up and compel her, but Elena is having none of it. She wants to pretend their normal.
They head to the party and meet J.C., they guy with the flyers. Elena and Caroline get stuck at the door --they're not invited in. Megan sees them and wonders why they're standing there.
At the Grill, Damon tells Jeremy he compelled the principal to give him a three day suspension instead of expulsion. Stefan comes in and gives Damon an awkward hello hug.
Back on campus, Elena gets a frantic call from Megan. She begs for help, but Elena can't come inside the building. Elena tries to get megan to invite her inside but then they hear a scream and Megan comes plummeting out of the window above. She lands in front of them. She was attacked by a vampire.
Damon and Silas-as-Stefan share a drink. Silas knows Katherine is staying at their place. Silas says hi to Jeremy, who seems to find him odd. When Silas leaves, Jeremy tells Damon that there was something wrong with Stefan. When not-Stefan touched him, he felt a chill in his tattoo, just like when Silas touched him. Bonnie pops up, telling Jeremy that when she died something must have happened to her spell. Damon is dismissive, but hunter Jeremy is sure that he just saw Silas, not Stefan.
Meanwhile, back at the Salvatore house, Stefan/Silas (Stilas) drops in on Katherine who's in the tub. He comes on to her, then tries to drown her. She slices him with a straight razor and runs.
Damon finds her downstairs and tells Jeremy to get her someone away and safe. He tells Stilas to drop the Stefan act.
Back on campus, Diane Freeman, with the campus police, tells Elena and Caroline they think Megan committed suicide. They're incredulous. But Caroline swiped Megan's phone just in case, because she left her a message right before she died at the party.
Back at the Salvatores, Stilas tries to explain the concept of "shadow self." Then he tells Damon that Stefan is somewhere suffering. He wants Katherine and Jeremy before he'll tell Damon where Stefan is.
Damon calls Jeremy and tells him to bring Katherine back. Katherine freaks out over the prospect of being handed over to Silas and makes Jeremy crash the car.
Matt gives Bonnie's dad a beer and tells her if he sees Bonnie, to say hi. He's not looking good. Matt sees a face in the crowd he recognizes. It's Nadia, the girl who stole Jeremy's Gilbert ring. She gives it back, saying it wasn't hers to take. As she's handing it over, someone comes up behind Matt and casts a spell on him.
Caroline and Elena return to their dorm room, which has been broken into. Megan's laptop, with her supposed suicide note, has been stolen. Elena goes through her phone and finds a picture of Megan with Elena's father.
After the crash, Katherine is able to walk away, but Jeremy is bloody and battered. He asks for help but she stumbles away.
Ghost Bonnie finds Jeremy but can't help him. Then Damon pulls up and opens a vein for him. He feeds Jeremy his blood, threatening to kill him himself if he doesn't wake up.
Caroline listens to a voicemail from Tyler, in which he explains he's deferring school to stay and help the wolf pack he's with.
Meanwhile, at the bottom of the quarry, Stefan drowns again and hallucinates. He imagines seeing Damon, urging him to flip his humanity switch to put himself out of his misery. Stefan remembers how hard it was to turn it back on last time as Damon urges him to go. Then Elena appears before him, urging him not to let go of is humanity.
Elena calls Damon to check in, she wants to stay to see what her dad has to do with her roommates death. Damon neglects to tell her Silas has returned, Stefan is missing and Jeremy got expelled.
Bonnie's dad addresses the gathered throngs at the block party, but he's interrupted by Stlias, who uses mind control to get him to stop talking. Stilas starts explaining he used mind control and over the past summer he's consumed an immeasurable amount of blood and has begun to wonder about the limits of his powers. He tells everyone to be quiet and not to move a muscle. Then he walks over and slits Bonnie's dad's throat. She's the only one who reacts. She screams and runs to him, but can't do anything. "Now that I have your attention, I need a favor. I need you to find someone. You all know Elena Gilbert. Well the girl I'm looking for looks exactly like her," he says.
