A dishevelled, twenty-something young woman walks into the German town from where she was abducted eleven year earlier, giving her name as Alice Webster. Her parents, scarred army officer Sam and teacher Gemma are overjoyed, as is tearaway brother Matthew, who inexplicably verbally abuses butcher's wife Nadia Herz. Sam's mistress sergeant Eve Stone contacts retired, terminally ill policeman Julien Baptiste who had been working on the unolved disappearance of Sophie Giroux, who was kidnapped along with Alice, which leads him to visit Iraq. Alice is unable to name her abductor, who raped her, as a result of which she apparently had a child - though she cannot recall it. Julien, however, wonder if she really is Alice Webster.
